A Treasure Hunter’s Dream
July is prime time for fairs, festivals and flea markets in Greater Burlington, and there's no better place to begin the quest for antique, vintage and primitive treasures. A Very Vintage Market (July 20, 2019) in Downtown Burlington features over 120 quality vendors who bring a uniquely eclectic feel to this event, with everything from treenware to homemade dog treats, custom-designed clothing to architectural salvage, handmade baby items to rare primitives and antiques.
Head west to the Des Moines County Fairgrounds for the West Burlington Flea Market (July 14, 2019), where as many as 200 vendors from all over the Midwest keep the stalls and aisles filled from 6 AM to 2 PM one Sunday each month from April to July (and two in September). If you do stay all day, don’t worry about breakfast - you can get biscuits and gravy or homemade cinnamon rolls for just a couple of bucks, and lunch and snacks are just as affordable with tons of fair-food favorites and homemade treats.
Keep digging in the same spot for even more hidden treasure: the Des Moines County Fair (July 23 – 30, 2019) is a week-long buffet of food, fun and entertainment. Street Fair Saturday is a new event this year that offers a flea-market-within-a-fair that’s sure to bring out intriguing finds.
If you’re still on the hunt, we’ll give you one last clue: you might just hit the motherload right around the corner! Preservation Station is the repository for everything salvaged by The Heritage Trust Foundation. In a historic downtown building (213 Valley Street), Preservation Station is open only on Saturdays from 9 AM - 1 PM. You won’t find carefully restored, repurposed or upcycled items here; everything is pretty much as is. You will find a true picker’s paradise, with genuine, provenanced pieces of all sorts, shapes and sizes. A recent treasure uncovered by The Heritage Trust (and, so far, available at Preservation Station): A 1916 Arts & Crafts colonnade and matching buffet in incredible condition.
