Why: More than 800 students from area schools gathered at Southeastern Community College in mid-March for the 5th and 8th Grade Career Fairs. These fairs are hosted annually by the Greater Burlington Partnership, Lee County Economic Development Group, and Southeastern Community College
Each career fair lasts about three hours with Des Moines and Lee County 5th and 8th classes are invited to participate. The fairs allow the students to learn about six different career pathways: Agriscience, Arts/Communication, Family/Human Services, Health Sciences, Business/Marketing, and Engineering. In addition, 8th Grade students attended an interactive session ‘Career Check’ where they make a real-life monthly budget.
The career fairs are put on each year with the help of our area businesses. Over thirty business people volunteered time out of their day to talk about their careers and the education and skills needed for success in their careers with these 5th and 8th grade students.
