In honor of the Halloween season, I took it upon myself to visit some of the famously haunted spots in Greater Burlington. I am a firm believer in the spiritual world, and I’ve always been interested in interacting with the supernatural. I’ve grown up watching different ghost hunting shows, and I’ve always wanted to be a ghost hunter myself.
This first site I visited was the famous Stony Hollow Road. It is rumored that there is a spirit that goes by the name of Lucinda that dwells along this road. She is believed to be a woman from the 1800’s. The story is that she waited on Stony Hollow Road for her lover who was supposed to meet her so they could run away together. Lucinda’s lover ended up being very late, and Lucinda quite literally jumped to conclusions and assumed he was not coming. She thought he had found another woman to run off with, or he left by himself. This left Lucinda heartbroken and caused her to climb to the top of one of the cliffs on the road, and jump to her death.
It’s rumored that her lover did eventually arrive, but he was too late. People say he was late because his wagon got stuck in the mud. They say if you say her name three times, she may appear in front of you. Be warned though, if she drops a rose at your feet, it’s believed that you will meet a tragic death within the coming days. I did not try this out, as I am very superstitious. If you’re braver than me you can see for yourself if this is true. Although I did not see anything out of the ordinary, I will admit that my stomach dropped as soon as I approached the cliffs.
The other site I visited was the Rock Spring Cemetery. There was once a one room schoolhouse that sat where the sign for the cemetery sits now. One day, a witch came along and burned down the schoolhouse with the teacher and students still inside. The witch then died, and they buried her at the top of the cemetery hill. They surrounded her grave with iron to keep her evil spirit trapped. It is rumored that if you visit the cemetery at night, you can smell the smoke from the schoolhouse burning. Once again, I did not see anything out of the ordinary, this could be because I visited both sites during the day. I will admit that both sites gave me a very unsettling feeling, and I am known to have very strong intuition.
