2025 Events Highlight Inclusion, Visibility, and Community Support

In June 2025, the city of Burlington, Iowa will host two public events in celebration of Pride Month, reflecting the community’s continued emphasis on inclusion and LGBTQ+ visibility. The events—Pride in the Park and Pride on the Riverfront—offer a combination of educational engagement, cultural expression, and community-building opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Pride in the Park: Family-Centered Programming in a Historic Setting

Date: Saturday, June 21, 2025
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location: Crapo Park Bandshell Area

Pride in the Park will take place on June 21 at the Crapo Park Bandshell area, offering a six-hour, inclusive family gathering. Set within one of Burlington’s most historic parks, the event emphasizes accessibility for all ages and encourages participation from a broad cross-section of the community.

The event is organized under Burlington Pride’s mission to promote education, awareness, and inclusion for LGBTQ individuals, supporters, and allies. While the atmosphere is celebratory, the event is grounded in the goals of community education and the normalization of queer identities. Programming is expected to include live entertainment, community resource tables, children’s activities, and space for advocacy and dialogue.

Crapo Park, established in the late 1800s and known for its scenic views of the Mississippi River, provides a natural setting for open-air gatherings. The bandshell, a longstanding venue for concerts and civic events, will serve as the focal point for performances and presentations. Participants are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and explore the park’s trails and garden areas in addition to attending the event itself.

This marks the latest in a series of annual Pride celebrations in the park, which have steadily grown in attendance and scope since their inception. Organizers have emphasized the importance of maintaining a space where LGBTQ youth, families, and elders can gather visibly and safely without the need for nightlife-oriented venues or age restrictions.

Pride on the Riverfront: A Full Day of Public Programming and Evening Performance

Date: Saturday, June 28, 2025
Location: Downtown Burlington and Riverfront Area

One week after Pride in the Park, Burlington will host Pride on the Riverfront, a multifaceted event spanning several locations and types of programming. The day will begin with a movement-based wellness activity, continue with a parade and outdoor festival, and conclude with a ticketed drag performance in the evening.

Morning Wellness and Movement

The first event of the day is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., with the Kalioke Movement Lounge offering a morning stretch session on the riverfront lawn. The activity is promoted as accessible to participants of all fitness levels and requires no prior experience or special attire. Organizers describe the session as a way to begin the day in a calm, inclusive environment.

Jefferson Street Parade

At 10:00 a.m., Burlington’s annual Pride Parade will proceed down Jefferson Street. The parade features floats, walking groups, and performances from a range of local organizations and individuals. As in previous years, the route through the city’s downtown core is designed to maximize visibility and community participation.

Parades during Pride Month have historical roots in protest and visibility activism, and the Jefferson Street parade continues this legacy while also celebrating community diversity and support. In addition to LGBTQ-specific organizations, many local businesses, civic groups, and churches participate in the event to publicly affirm their support for inclusive values.

Riverfront Pride Festival

Following the parade, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Riverfront Pride Festival will offer additional programming along the Mississippi riverfront. This portion of the day includes live music, informational booths, food vendors, arts and crafts, and interactive activities. The festival is open to all ages and is designed to highlight both the celebratory and educational aspects of Pride.

Unlike many traditional festivals, Pride on the Riverfront maintains a dual focus: entertainment and awareness. Community health organizations, advocacy groups, and cultural organizations often use the event to distribute materials, offer services, and engage with residents about LGBTQ-related topics. At the same time, local performers and artists contribute to the festive atmosphere through music and visual displays.

Pride After Dark: Drag Show Performance

The final component of the day is Pride After Dark, a 21+ drag show taking place from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The event offers a platform for local and regional performers to showcase their artistry in a dedicated space. While separate from the family-focused daytime events, Pride After Dark contributes to the broader visibility and cultural expression of the LGBTQ community.

Community Context and Significance

The Pride events in Burlington represent an ongoing commitment to inclusive public programming in Southeast Iowa. Both events—Pride in the Park and Pride on the Riverfront—seek to balance celebration with civic engagement. Organizers have consistently framed the celebrations not only as opportunities for communal gathering but as educational initiatives intended to reduce stigma and build a more inclusive local culture.
