You’re prepared to see stores and restaurants on every avenue. It makes you wonder where locals go to get away from all the hustle bustle of city living. Here in Burlington, there are many places to enjoy the outdoors.
If you’re looking for a day of trekking the trails, head over to Starr’s Cave Park and Preserve. Starr’s Cave is home to one natural cave, two man-made caves, Flint River Creek, and a lot of wildlife and plants. There is a 3.3-mile trail that varies in elevation, which makes it a moderate level hike. To get to Starr’s Cave, you must cross the beautiful bridge.

Starr’s Cave has been closed since May 2010 to prevent bats in the cave from catching white-nose syndrome, but you can still stand at the entrance and look into the over 100 yards long cave. Don’t worry, there are two other caves in the area, you just have to take the trail. Crinoid Cavern is located on the starting side of Flint Creek, but to get to Devil’s Kitchen you must cross the creek.
If the woods aren’t your style, you can check out the intertwined parks of Crapo and Dankwardt. Dankwardt park has many activities to choose from such as their pool, tennis court, and skatepark. It also features a big disc golf course that stretches throughout the park. Another thing that is great about both parks is that there are many paved pathways, so it’s easily handicap accessible.
Crapo overlooks the Mississippi river and holds many historical monuments. Crapo also has event centers such as the stage where there are occasional orchestra concerts, and an altar for weddings.
Both parks also have multiple playgrounds to choose from, and lots of shelter houses to host events.
