Conquer the Crooked

Each Memorial Day weekend, Downtown Burlington, Iowa becomes a battleground for cyclists from across the country as they tackle one of the most grueling—and unique—races in the Midwest: the Snake Alley Criterium. With events set for Friday and Saturday, May 23 & 24, 2025, the event continues a tradition that has captivated riders and fans alike for more than 40 years.

The course winds through the historic streets of downtown, but the real centerpiece is Snake Alley itself. Built in 1894, this tightly curved brick street stretches just 275 feet but rises dramatically with five major switchbacks and a 21% grade. For cyclists, Snake Alley is a test of pure power and precision. Immortalized by Ripley’s Believe It or Not as “unbelievably crooked,” it’s what sets this criterium apart from any other race in the region.

The Criterium includes a full day of races for various skill levels, from junior riders to elite competitors. Racers loop a .9-mile circuit that blends smooth sprints with intense climbs and tight corners. Friday night’s pre-race event, “Friday Night Fever,” offers an evening of twilight racing that sets the tone for the weekend.

While the race has grown into a community-wide celebration, its roots are firmly in the sport of competitive cycling. Over the years, the Snake Alley Criterium has earned a reputation as a proving ground for serious athletes looking to test their limits.

For cycling fans, sports enthusiasts, or those curious about this storied event, Burlington’s Snake Alley Criterium offers a chance to witness raw athleticism against a backdrop of rich local history. Whether you're on the course or cheering from the sidelines, it's a piece of Iowa sporting tradition worth experiencing.
