Enjoy a step back in time.

Nestled at the top of the iconic Snake Alley in Downtown Burlington, Iowa, the Garrett-Phelps House Museum offers visitors a captivating journey back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Operated by the Des Moines County Historical Society, this meticulously preserved Italianate-style home is a testament to the elegance and charm of Victorian-era living.

Built in 1851, the Garrett-Phelps House served as the residence of two prominent local families. After the original structure was expanded in 1870, the home has been carefully maintained, preserving its original architecture and many of its period furnishings. Each room tells a story, from the grand parlor adorned with intricate woodwork to the kitchen that showcases the tools and traditions of a bygone era. The house remains a time capsule of Burlington's rich cultural and social history.

The museum, currently open Sundays between 1 – 4PM, provides insights into the lives of the families who once called this house home, as well as the broader history of Des Moines County. Visitors can explore artifacts, photographs, and exhibits that delve into the area’s past, including its riverboat heritage and industrial growth.

Visitors should definitely check out the Medical Memories exhibit, located on the third floor, which is home to various medical equipment that was used by the doctors and nurses who practiced in the building during it’s time as a hospital, and then a nursing school before it reverted to the Garrett-Phelps family home.

Located just steps from Burlington's vibrant downtown, the Garrett-Phelps House Museum is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.

Whether you’re captivated by antique furnishings, fascinated by historical tales, or simply looking for a unique cultural experience, the Garrett-Phelps House Museum offers an enriching glimpse into the region’s storied past. Don’t miss the opportunity to step through its doors and immerse yourself in the history of one of Iowa’s most charming cities.
