Bald Eagles in Greater Burlington
Published on January 23, 2025

Spotting these majestic creatures in Greater Burlington is a winter treat!

Bald eagles will never cease to captivate nature lovers, with their white-feathered heads, piercing yellow eyes, and powerful wingspans that can reach up to seven feet. While they can be spotted year-round in parts of the United States, the colder months bring a unique opportunity to observe these birds in action, especially in the Midwest.

As rivers and lakes freeze over in the colder months, these resourceful birds flock to areas with reliable open water, such as the Mississippi River. One prime location to witness this natural spectacle is Lock & Dam 18, located just north of Greater Burlington. The dam’s turbulent waters prevent freezing, creating the perfect feeding grounds for eagles.

From December through February, Lock & Dam 18 becomes a hotspot for eagle enthusiasts. Visitors can observe these magnificent birds, often in the hundreds, perched in nearby trees, scanning the water for fish. The dam also offers great opportunities for photography, as the eagles' dramatic movements and picturesque surroundings create unforgettable moments for shutterbugs.

Beyond Lock & Dam 18, Greater Burlington itself offers plenty of spots along the Mississippi River where eagle sightings are common. The area's natural beauty and accessibility make it an excellent destination for both birdwatchers and nature lovers. A lesser known destination is the banks of the river accessible via Sullivan Slough Road.

Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just someone seeking a winter adventure, a visit to Greater Burlington and Lock & Dam 18 provides an unparalleled chance to see these incredible creatures up close in their natural habitat.
