For centuries Burlington has been full of artists and performers, and there has always been a place for these artists to express themselves. Downtown Burlington shows the massive amount of art influence there is in the Burlington community.
First, if you’re coming in from the bridge, you’ll spot the Burlington mural. This mural represents the core parts of Burlington and its history. It was created by local artist Craig Jacoba, who is also known for making the murals in the children’s clinics at the Great River Hospital.
Then, if you head onto Jefferson Street, you’ll spot the Burlington Art Center Statue. This statue represents all the different kinds of art such as painting/drawing, film, sculpting, performance, and music.
Once you head into the Art Center, you’ll see an exhibit done by local artist, Deborah Scott. Each realistic statue has its own story attached to it. There are even characters from different timelines. There are different exhibits every month so be sure to visit more than once!
To see performance and film art, be sure to stop by the Capitol Theater to see what they’re showing. They show a variety of performances such as music concerts, plays, musicals, and dance recitals. They also show throwback films and seasonal films. There’s always something new showing!
There is also some “easter egg” type of art in downtown Burlington. These benches are scattered throughout downtown and are painted by local artists every few years. There are also some wall murals scattered around which can be a little bit trickier to find, but who doesn’t like a little challenge?
If you’re looking for a day of appreciating the arts, downtown Burlington won’t let you down! I didn’t even mention the architectural and landscape art, you’ll have to see it to believe it!
