Des Moines County Conservation will be leading bi-weekly hikes through different parks all around the county. Join Naturalist Marcus for a 1-4 mile hike at a park from January through May. Complete all of the hikes and earn some swag. These programs are free, and facemasks are required if you are within 6 feet of others. For this hike, please meet at Starr's Cave Nature Center and follow Marcus to the park.
Formerly known as Thye Woods, Hickory Bend Conservation Area is probably the most remote, and one of the most undeveloped areas in the county’s park system. It is managed exclusively for natural resources and wildlife. Flint River Trail skirts the eastern edge of the property and a spur off the trail at the very north end of the property goes up to a volunteer-built shelter at the top of a hill with a stunning view of the creek and valley below. This is the only developed site on the whole property. The rest of the area is left for wildlife, making it a popular destination for hunters and wildlife watchers.
