Career Fairs

Middle School Career Fair

Each spring, area business leaders share their job experiences and insight with students. For the last 10 years, the Future Workforce Committee has hosted the annual 5th Grade Career Fair and 8th Grade Project CAPE Career Fair. Each career fair lasts about 3 hours and all Des Moines County School 5th Grade and from Southeast Iowa 8th Grade classes are invited to participate.

Students will learn about six different career paths: Agriscience, Arts/Communication, Family/Human Services, Health Sciences, Business/Marketing and Engineering. The fair is held at Southeastern Community College and the combined attendance for the fair is over 650 students each year.

Helping our area students explore career paths right here in their own backyard is the key focus of our Career Exploration activities. Our goal is to increase awareness of job openings in the area as well as the skillsets, education, and professional training needed to obtain those jobs.

Career Exploration Day

Each spring and fall Des Moines County high school students and Southeastern Community College students are given the opportunity to visit one of area manufacturers and observe careers available. The goal is to increase awareness of job openings in Southeast Iowa.

Students spend time with individuals who are currently in their selected career and learn about the day-to-day responsibilities as well as what education and training is needed to be ready for the position. In addition, students will get an overview of the company, the jobs it has to offer and, where permitted, a plant tour.
