Greater Burlington Partnership Hosting Government Day for Southeastern Community College MPOWER U Students This Friday, November 13th

 

Greater Burlington, Iowa – The Greater Burlington Partnership will be hosting Government Day for Southeastern Community College MPOWER U students this Friday. During this day, students will learn about local, state and federal government.   Each speaker will be touching on a ‘day in the life’ and what hot issues they are working on.  To facilitate their learning, the Greater Burlington Partnership has put together a lineup of virtual speakers that include:

  • Senator Chuck Grassley
  • Senator Joni Ernst
  • Congressman Dave Loebsack
  • State Representative Dennis Cohoon
  • Jim Ferneau, Burlington City Manager
  • Tom Broeker, Des Moines County Supervisor

“Government Day is a fantastic way for area students to learn about government first hand.” Said Rachel Lindeen, Government Relations and Talent Development Director at the Greater Burlington Partnership. “Students will be able to hear from and interact with our local officials and elected leaders. Giving them the opportunity to hear about city, county, state and federal issues.”

MPOWER U is a college-level class in leadership that offers high school juniors opportunities to experience leadership in action within the communities in Southeast Iowa.  Students learn the skills and traits of what makes a good leader. The MPOWER U class consists of two students each from all participating high schools in Des Moines, Henry, Lee, and Louisa counties. Participants are selected by their respective faculty and guidance counselors.

MPOWER U students travel throughout the region to meet various community, business, civic, and elected leaders.   They will be using the information gathered to form position statements, that will be presented to state leaders at a later date.

The Greater Burlington Partnership exists to ensure Greater Burlington is a growing regional center of commerce, industry, education, health care, entertainment and culture with provides a great place to live and work.
