Legislative Priorities

Working with our elected officials at every level

The Chamber of Commerce is a business association that serves as a catalyst for economic growth and community development in Greater Burlington. A successful Chamber of Commerce is needed to work within the political realm and advocate positions important to local businesses. It is imperative that the Chamber of Commerce has a set of legislative priorities that reflect the interests of the Greater Burlington and Des Moines County business community.

The State of Iowa, the federal government and our local community must do everything possible to encourage investment, workforce development and job retention. There is an alarming trend to take local business for granted and assume that the factories, shops and offices will always be there to support the community workforce. And that businesses will be able to survive the impacts of rising taxes and fees, increased regulations and the challenges faced. We must understand that businesses have options to relocate to other communities, states and countries.

We must continue our efforts to advocate for our business community and maintain Greater Burlington’s reputation as a thriving hub and great place to both live and work. The competition is not cutting back, neither should the State of Iowa. Each year the Government Relations Committee takes a deep look into Greater Burlington Priorities on a local, state and federal level to advocate on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce members.
