Helping our area students explore career paths right here in their own backyard is the key focus of our Career Exploration activities. Our goal is to increase awareness of jobs available in the area as well as the skillsets and education needed to obtain those jobs.
Career Fairs Each spring area business people share their job experiences with area students. The Future Workforce Committee, of the Greater Burlington Partnership has hosted a 5th Grade Career Fair and an 8th Grade Project CAPE Career Fair for over 10 years. The career fair is held at Southeastern Community College and combined attendance for the 2 fairs is over 650 students each year.
Each spring and fall Des Moines County high school students and Southeastern Community College students are given the opportunity to visit one of our area manufacturers and observe careers available within their facilities. The goal of the day is to increase awareness of jobs available in Southeast Iowa.
Students spend time with individuals who are currently in their selected career and learn about the day to day responsibilities as well as what education and training is needed to be ready for a job in that field. In addition, an overview of the company, the many jobs it has to offer and, where permitted, a plant tour will be a part of their Career Exploration Day.
