October 19, 2016 (Des Moines) — The cover of the next official Iowa Travel Guide will feature the Snake Alley Criterium in Burlington. The cover image was chosen after nine days of voting in a Facebook promotion from the Iowa Tourism Office. View the winning cover.
The Snake Alley Criterium is a truly unique event for Iowa, just as Snake Alley is a one-of-a-kind destination,” said Iowa Tourism Office Manager Shawna Lode. “No other state can claim a bike event on the world’s crookedest street. We are sure the cover will pique interest in what else Iowa offers.”
The next Iowa Travel Guide, which will be available in early 2017, is available for preorder now. Inside the new guide expect to see great content highlighting multiple outdoor adventures, antique shops and tasty road trips in addition to thousands of listings for attractions, hotels, bed and breakfast inns, cabins and campgrounds/RV parks. More than 125,000 guides are distributed annually to travelers from every state and around the world.
The Iowa Travel Guide Cover Contest began on Monday, October 10, and concluded on Tuesday, October 18. The winning cover was announced during the Iowa Tourism Conference in Bettendorf today and on the Iowa Tourism Office’s Facebook page.
In total, nearly 12,000 votes were cast with the Snake Alley Criterium cover receiving 5,223 votes. Other images under consideration showcased a family walking near the Turkey River in Elkader, the Monster roller coaster at Adventureland in Altoona and a family enjoying the Sioux City Art Center in Sioux City.
Held annually on Memorial Day weekend, the Snake Alley Criterium challenges cyclists from across the world to ride up what Ripley’s Believe It or Not has named the crookedest street in the world. Snake Alley consists of five half-curves and two-quarter curves over a distance of 275 feet.
