BURLINGTON, Iowa- The Greater Burlington Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) has secured $50,000 in grants from the Iowa Economic Development Authority for sporting events taking place between July 2017 and June 2018. This grant, administered by the Iowa Tourism Office, is the third such award for Greater Burlington in the past five years.
The Greater Burlington Sports Commission, a committee of the CVB, was awarded the grant to support marketing and advertising expenses, officials’ fees, and tournament bid fees for the events. Each partner event contributes a portion of a $25,000 cash match based upon their awarded funds.
To receive the grant funding, the Monster Match, a Halloween-themed soccer tournament, and 18 other events competed with communities across the state on their ability to attract visitors to quality events.
“Sporting events are an important part of visitor attraction to Greater Burlington,” said Commission member Kevin Carr. “This funding encourages our local partners to build upon their successes with enhanced events in future years.”
In the previous two award years, Greater Burlington benefitted from more than 46,000 tourists thanks to the efforts of 11 different local sporting events. Contributions to the local economy from a similar number of visitors should surpass $12 million in the next fiscal year.
The Greater Burlington Partnership exists to ensure that Greater Burlington is a growing regional center of commerce, industry, education, health care, entertainment and culture, providing a great place to live and work.
