Relying on a study by Gruen Gruen + Associates early this year that showed 1,500 net new housing units were needed by 2025 in Des Moines County, the Greater Burlington Partnership and Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission applied for and have received a designation from the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) opening the door for new, qualifying residential development projects to access Iowa’s Workforce Housing Tax Credit Program.

The Community Foundation of Des Moines County has received its largest ever gift from the estate of Marvin R. Mickelson of Burlington.  The gift of $325,000 has created the Marvin R. Mickelson Fund and has been established to support a number of causes Mickelson found worthy.

November 29, 2016

The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) today awarded $965,500 in Main Street Iowa Challenge Grants to 14 communities around the state. The grants will benefit local improvement projects such as façade upgrades and restoration, upper floor rehabilitation, building stabilization and repairs and remodeled spaces for expanding downtown businesses.  The announcements were made during a ceremony held at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden.

Dozens of storefronts in downtown Burlington will come to life on Thursday, December 8 for the 18th annual Living Windows celebration. The event takes place all along Jefferson Street from 6 to 8 PM and includes carolers, crafts, puppet shows, marshmallow roasting, ice sculpting, a festival of trees, free horse drawn trolley rides, and more.

Ghosts and goblins will have a chance to haunt downtown Burlington on Friday, October 28. Downtown trick or treat hours are from 4 to 6 PM, with treats available at dozens of participating merchants.
